BASIS Screenings

DSNWK CDDO is responsible to complete the Basic Assessment and Service Information System (BASIS) for all individuals determined eligible for services and annually thereafter. The BASIS is a screening instrument required by the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS) that, through a series of questions, scores the applicant in three categories: Adaptive, Maladaptive, and Health. These three scores are combined and averaged to determine the converted score which is used to determine eligibility for various funding streams. Basis Screening

Behavioral Support

DSNWK CDDO has two Support Specialists who have completed the Kansas Institute for Positive Behavior Support Curriculum through the University of Kansas. The Support Specialists consult with and provide mentoring to the Life Plan Teams on the Positive Behavior Support process. This consultation will enable the Life Plan Teams to gain confidence in their ability to complete future plans on their own with less intensive support. The Support Specialists also assist the Teams in reviewing and analyzing data being collected and monitoring the health and safety of the individual.

Education & Training Services

CPR Training DSNWK CDDO's Education & Training Service staff provide comprehensive education, training and technical assistance to the persons served, parents, guardians, and staff of affiliated service providers, including limited licensed providers and self directing parties. This assistance will include such areas as Individual Rights, and Team Building Skills.

Training presentations also offered include the Adult and Child CPR, First Aid, Sexual Abuse Prevention, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Prevention of Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation. Direct Service staff are offered training the Mandt System (non physical and physical strategies for crisis intervention) and Core Skills Training which provides them with the essential skills needed to support individuals with developmental disabilities. Core Skills Training consists of the following components: Engagement and Recognition of Opportunities to Teach, Rationales, Teaching Interventions, and SODAS (a method for supporting and teaching decision making and problem solving for groups and individuals).

In addition, DSNWK CDDO has a nurse available to provide assistance and training to direct support staff throughout the CDDO area. The Medical Support Specialist has medical training in a variety of medical areas. Current class offerings include Medication Administration, Medication Administration Recertifications, Healthcare, and other classes on medical related topics.

DSNWK CDDO strives to offer training to staff that involves participant interactions, rather than lecture type training. In many of the trainings the participants are demonstrating their skills, participating in role plays, doing hands-on learning activities, watching videos, or helping to teach the class. All the training conducted by Education and Training Services is competency based and the skills of the staff are evaluated during each training. The College for Direct Support online training curriculum is a valuable training resource that supervisors can use to assist their staff to learn about topics of interest, brush up on their skills, or promote advancement opportunities within DSNWK. Each online training module has a checklist which can be used by the supervisor to review the employees demonstration of the skills learned and to provide performance coaching opportunities between the supervisor and their employee. DSNWK also has an extensive Training Resource Library which contains over 1,500 resources in various mediums including: books, CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes, Pamphlets, Journal Articles, Magazines, and others which can be checked out.

Employment Background Checks

If requested, DSNWK CDDO will complete background checks for employees of affiliated providers in the following areas: Criminal Background, KDHE Nurse Registry, SRS Child Abuse and Neglect Registry, and SRS Adult Abuse and Neglect Registry. The affiliated provider is charged the cost to complete the background check, plus a $1 processing fee for each source checked.

Quality Assurance Services

The CDDO is responsible to ensure investigations occur regarding all reportable situations of abuse, neglect, or exploitation. The affiliated provider is expected to fully investigate any allegations of abuse, neglect, or exploitation and the CDDO reserves the right to participate in any investigation involving physical abuse (resulting in medical treatment outside first aid) or sexual abuse. DSNWK CDDO's Quality Assurance Coordinator is available to provide consultation to affiliated providers on the investigative process.
